How to choose the right material for your exterior shutters
Exterior shutters can be a stylish and attractive feature for your home, but you will have to consider carefully what sort of shutters to install. Here is a quick guide to some of the most common materials.
Wood
This is the traditional material for making window shutters. It has a natural look and is certainly one of the more stylish options. The shutters can be made from a variety of woods including poplar and basswood and can be very strong whilst being flexible and lightweight. They are also easily made to fit a variety of designs and shapes.
There are, however, a few drawbacks. For one thing, they are likely to be a more expensive option. They are also less waterproof than other options, although they will be treated to ensure that they do not rot. They will also require a bit of maintenance — they will need to be varnished every now and again to ensure they keep their natural finish.
Aluminium
Aluminium is a strong material that is highly suitable for outdoor use. It is especially useful if you are interested in home security, as it is possible to add locks and other home security features. They are long-lasting, easy to clean and are usually cheaper than timber shutters.
However, despite their durability, aluminium shutters will not last forever and can be prone to denting and corrosion. They are also less attractive than timber — although they can be painted, they may look a little bit cheaper.
PVC
PVC is usually the cheapest option for shutters. This does not mean they are of poor quality — they are very durable, able to withstand extremes of weather and are resistant to scratches and other damage. They do not require much in the way of maintenance and should not fade over time.
As they are very lightweight they are not suitable to cover a large window without adding extra structure such as dividing struts. They are also not the best option if security is your main concern, as they are not strong enough to keep out a determined intruder. They can also appear cheaper compared to other materials.
Which material you use will depend on your budget and your specific circumstances. If you have any questions or concerns, just get in touch with an exterior shutter supplier in your area, and you will soon have a stylish addition to your home.
